Depression

For many people it becomes a way of life... feeling hopeless and tired, and sick much of the time.  During periods of depression the immune system is severely impaired, and illness finds a hospitable home. Once chronic illness and pain sets in, the depression gets worse and the deep dark hole of depression sucks harder. At this stage of the game it can become almost impossible to dig yourself out of the hole. Even antidepressant drugs don't do the job.  While these drugs may help take the edge off the darkness, they just can't give you your joy back.  And in some cases these drugs may make it more difficult to recover from depression.

One important reason that it is so difficult to pull out of depression is something called State Dependent Memory. In the book MOLECULES OF EMOTION there is an interesting connection in the production of a neuropeptide called CRF (cortical releasing factor) and negative childhood experiences.  These negative experiences, or traumas, cause a negative feedback loop that produces more of these chemicals and accesses more of these negative memories which stimulates more of the CRF production. Now, this is the very simple explanation and it leaves out significant amounts of information. (for the rest of the explanation see pgs. 268-273 in MOLECULES OF EMOTION.) It is important to understand the process of the deep dark hole that sucks. The negative thoughts and memories that are suppressed can create a continual loop that can make depression very hard to overcome.

What does this mean for those who are depressed? If you want to get better you must find ways to change your state of mind, and allow your brain to stop producing the CRF from negative memories.  The most direct route is to deal with the negative memories and take the fuel out of them. Once these memories are released and resolved, the chemical production changes in the body, right down to the cells, and you can begin to feel better.  Basically that is the book in a nutshell. Of course there is much more to it. But this will get you started in understanding how these bad feelings turn into depression.

How do you resolve these memories? Well, pushing them down and ignoring them (can you say denial?) is certainly a coping strategy that will get you by, but to heal your body and mind, you will have to get down and dirty. You will want to get into these memories and feel… resolve the resentments, anger and conflict. You can work on this by journaling. Putting your feelings on paper has some amazing healing properties.  Studies from IMMUNE POWER PERSONALITY show major shifts in immune function immediately after journaling about an unpleasant memory. I always give my clients homework of writing and journaling. It can be very enlightening.

Even if you have been depressed for years, the writing can help you turn it around. The next avenue is to force yourself to indulge in some other thoughts so you can get out of the "state" that is perpetuating the depression chemicals.  I have seen clients who are deeply and profoundly depressed, sometimes for years, (some will say their entire life) and within 2-3 months of releasing and resolving childhood traumas and negative memories, their life has turned around. So, you have a choice. If you are depressed you can continue to stuff it, or you can begin a journey of discovery. Start by writing. Write a letter TO yourself. What do you want for yourself? What would it mean if you felt good? What benefits do you get by being depressed?  Be as honest as you can and begin the exploration.

SELF HYPNOSIS- can I make myself cluck like a chicken?

How do you learn self hypnosis? Where to start?  It can be very simple. The shift in brain activity is a learned response, so the more you do it, the better you get at going into trance. It can be very simple to begin.  Here is an easy way.

Get comfortable, close your eyes, and just observe the darkness behind your eyelids. As you observe the darkness, let you eyes roll up in your head (as if you are looking at the inside of your forehead) and focus on your breathing. With each breath, feel your body relaxing and letting go.

Now notice (or create) a path in front of you with a door in the distance. Walk or float toward the door, and when you approach this door, notice everything about it. The color, the texture, the feel… and when you walk through that door, let yourself double the relaxation you now feel.

Notice now another door in the distance. When you approach this door, notice the details again… and as you step through allow yourself to double the relaxation.  Continue to walk through these doors until you find the door that leads to the room of possibilities. In this room you will be able to be whatever you want, have abilities that you have always wanted, be healthier, more confident, have no allergies, be healed from an illness… whatever it is that you have been wanting to experience.  Go into the door and experience yourself in this room, with this ability. If your new thing is having a better golf swing, let yourself experience everything about it. If you want to eliminate allergies, let your body and mind learn how to NOT react to flowers, cats, or whatever allergy you have. Perhaps you want to be confident when speaking to a large group. Put yourself in this room full of people who are fascinated with what you have to say. Let yourself discover what it is like to be relaxed and comfortable in front of a large group.

Last issue we discussed your memory. I recieved many interesting emails from all of you about your memory, or lack of it. Here is an interesting letter from Dan:

I've seen how powerful suggestion can be. I used to be
absent minded. I grew up hearing my mother tell everyone how absent minded I
was. This is her favorite story about my absent mindedness. It occured when
I was a young teenager. One day, she asked me to go outside and roll up the
car windows because it was going to rain. I went outside but by the time I
got to the cars I forgot exactly what it was I was supposed to do. I only
remembered it was something about the car windows. I looked at the car
windows, saw that they were rolled up and rolled them all down! I hated
being absent minded! People would get so upset with me because I'd forget to
do important things. And I got sick of hearing that I was absent minded.

Then one day I discovered your website and read your response to Carol about
losing weight. I applied the same technique to my absentmindedness. Each
night I told myself that I had an excellent memory, an above average memory.
The change was amazing. It didn't occur overnight. But after awhile I'd find
myself remembering things without even trying. For instance my wife would
ask me to buy something at the grocery store after work. On my way home from
work, all of a sudden, I'd remember to go to the grocery store. This happens
so frequently now. And each time it's a pleasant surprise, almost as if
someone is whispering in my ear to remind me.
Sorry for the long email. But I wanted you to know that I appreciate what
you've done for me and I really believe that what you've told me today will
help also. Thanks!

When Dan remembered that he got sick of hearing that he was absent minded, he was able to find and change a belief about his memory. If you are told something about yourself, as a child, you will begin to believe it. Dan may have always had a great memory, but because he heard this over and over and over, his little sponge like mind believed it. So, as an adult, whenever he forgot something, it would give more power to the subconscious belief that his is absent minded.

Dan made a choice to change it. He didn't need any tools, sessions, training or books. He only needed to tell his mind that he has an excellent memory. Since he did it at night, he was already in trance (that period before sleep) and his mind made the shift. Thank you Dan!

What are you ready to change this week? What old habit or behavior would you like to let go fo, or replace with a healthy habit? Hmmmm... here's one that instantly comes to mind. EXERCISE MOTIVATION. Out of all the assorted problems people come to me with, I get the most requests for this in my practice. How can I motivate myself to exercise?

THIS WEEK- every night before bed, let yourself remember how good it feels after you are done exercising. Remeber how nice it is  when you feel proud of yourself, exquisitely  endorphined, peaceful and tired. (It's a good kind of tired, yes?)
NOW, flood that feeling into your mind and body, and then imagine you have a dial that you can use to turn it up. Turn up the dial, and let those feelings increase.
NEXT, ask your mind to feel this way ANYTIME you think about exercising. Ask your brain to turn up the dial so that this feeling becomes irresistable and continue increasing until NOTHING can stop you from putting on the shoes and gettin busy. (Yes, this means you are going to have to take the clothes off of the treadmill where they are so neatly arranged) (You know who you are- that thing was not made to hang clothes on.)

Do this for several days, and then you may just wonder what the heck you are doing when you discover  yourself  running down the street , or pedaling like you are possesed, or just find yourself dancing like a monkey.

TRANCE and other wierd states
A reader asks:

Thanks Wendi, I was pleasantly surprised to find a newsletter from you.  The
article on memory enhancement was very interesting and useful. Keep up the
good work.

Have you ever heard of anyone who could put themselves in a trance?  A
self-induced trance, without the help of tapes or a hypnotist? How is this
done?

GOOD QUESTION. In reality, trance is not nearly as mysterious as most people think. It can be as simple as driving down the highway, suddenly realizing that you are at your exit, but don't remember the last 10 minutes.  Highway hypnosis is a very common state of trance.
Sometimes when you are staring at the computer screen you may find yourself going into trance....  as a matter of fact, one of the signs of being in trance is time distortion.  Time seems to go by very quickly. A person in my office in trance for 45 minutes will swear it was only 10. A woman in labor in trance will think an hour was only 15 minutes. Sitting at your computer, staring at the pretty colors for 4 hours.... well, there is a major time distortion, when you see that it is midnight, and the last four hours seem to have dissapeared.
Trance can happen anywhere, anytime. To put yourself in trance intentionally, without help of tapes or hypnotists, is easy and free.
Look at the link on my site for self-hypnosis. Before you go into trance, set up some guidlines.
FIRST- set your intention. Decide what you want to create, phrase it in a positive statement.
SECOND-choose a spot to stare at, and begin to suggest that your eyes will get heavy, relaxed and tired. The moment they close, your entire body will relax very deeply and you will allow you inner mind to make these changes.
THIRD-tell yourself that all the sounds around you will relax you deeper, even the ordinary everyday sounds.
Continue to relax your body as deeply as possible. The more relaxed your body is, the more your mind can focus on creating change. It is sort of like freeing up more memory in your computer. If your mind/brain does not have to monitor your body movements, or visual input, or auditory input, it has an enhanced focus to create what you want.
Hypnosis is defined as a relaxed, focused state of concentration.  There ya go. More about self-hypnosis

SNORING-

IMPROVE YOUR MEMORY

Everyone who has come to me for help, e-mailed me, called me, sent questions by carrier pidgeon.....  asks me how they can improve their memory.  In other words, it is a popular question. Space to store memory is not lacking in our brain. We have more than enough room to store all the information that comes in. The pathways to access the information are probably the culprit.

Our brain cannot access all of the memories, all of the time, (it would probably explode) so we must have a selective memory. We can only access so much stuff at once. The problem is in getting to the place where these memories we need at the moment are stored.

In your brain there are neurotransmitters. These neurotransmitters are the little itty bitty bridge that access the information that is stored in your brain. Every message that your brain sends is sent through a connection called a neurotransmitter. If you are very stressed, drink a lot, do drugs, are sleep deprived, and so on.... you are probably low on neurotransmitters. We are constantly burning them off from STRESS mostly, and even good stress like excercise will burn neurotransmitters.   When your neurotransmitters are low you will feel sluggish, foggy, and tired, and sometimes it can contribute to depression.

Solution?  Less drinking, less stress, eat better, stop doing drugs, quit worrying.... yadda yadda yadda.
Quick fix? Take L-Tyrosine. It is an amino acid that will build neurotransmitters quickly. When taken by itself, it goes directly to the brain and begins to enhance the production of these little buggers. Within two days you will be feeling better, clearer, sharper and less stressed.  I like to be sure I take it before I give a lecture or a training, because it seems to make me a lot more creative.  Try it.

Mental strategy? Create categories for memory. For instance, if you need to remember names, make a special machine inside of your brain that holds all the names and pictures of the people you know. Start by closing your eyes (not now, since you won't be able to read this) and run through some memories of names and faces of people you know. Find an interesting way to create a machine that stores the name and picture in a special way.   After you have run several names through it, you are now accesing the part of your brain that stores this type of memory.

Today when you meet someone new, even if it is just the checker in the grocery store, enter the name and image into your brain machine, and use a trigger... something like a pinch of your ear lobe. This trigger will be used when you need to recall the name later.  In other words, next time you are stumped for a name, squeeze your earlobe, and let your machine bring up the picture and name for you. Cool, huh?

WHAT YOU ASK FOR.....

...is what you get. Pay attention to your inner voice and the way you are talking to yourself. I think that the number ONE thing that we do to limit ourselves and sabotage any possible chance for change, is in the way we talk to ourselves.

Imagine that every word you say to yourself is like a hypnotic suggestion and that your brain is going to believe it, accept it, and act on it.

When you say to yourself, I AM REALLY BAD WITH NAMES, so shall it be.  You are choosing to be bad at names, you will get NO OTHER possible result, and you are reinforcing the belief that you are bad with names.

If you tell someone, I HAVE A BAD BACK, you are only going to strengthen the belief that your back is bad and always will be.

When you say to yourself, I HAVE INSOMNIA.... I NEVER SLEEP WELL AT NIGHT, you are hypnotizing yourself to have insomnia and to never change it. I used to have insomnia and the thing that broke the cycle was

What to do? First become aware of your self talk. When you catch yourself saying or thinking something destructive, STOP, and tell yourself that is the way it used to be. Put it in the past. Then replace it with the new words, that describe what you DO want. 
For instance, you catch yourself saying: I am bad with names, change it to I was bad with names. Now I am getting better and better at remembering them. Names come easily to me.   Now at least you have the POSSIBILITY that you will remember names easier. Yes?

I HAVE A BAD BACK, would be a statement of beleif about your back. It only has one possibility. What if you said, MY BACK IS GETTING BETTER EVERY DAY. MY BACK IS HEALING.   At least it has a chance to do something different. A good book, Mind Body Prescription,  talks about how you talk to your back. The doctor who wrote it, says he has over 90% success in eliminating chronic back pain. The way you talk to it is the secret. If you want to know more, ask

Summary: Pretend that you are a hypnotist and that every word is a hypnotic suggestion that your brain is compelled to comply with. Then notice if you are asking for the results you want!

THE EASIEST, MOST SIMPLE AND AMAZING WAY TO CHANGE YOUR MIND

Stop whatever you are doing. (except for reading this)
Focus up.
Pay attention... this is really important.
Here is the most powerful thing you can do to make a change, and it is free.

Just before you go to sleep at night, you are entering a state of trance. There are a few brief moments where your mind is very suggestible. Also during this time, you mind is getting ready to SLEEP ON IT, whatever IT is that you were last thinking about.

If you go to sleep thinking about your problem, worrying, or being angry, you will probably get more of the same, amplify the problem, expand on it, and feel even worse when you wake up.

BUT,

What if you take that time to ask your mind to solve a problem for you while you sleep?
What if you tell your little brain to find the problem and release it?
Howz about telling your mind that you would like to feel energized and creative when you awaken?
OR perhaps you would like to ask your mind to allow you to sleep deeper, and more soundly tonight?

Here is what I have done with my little pea brain at night.
I asked my mind to find and release the cause of my ringing in my ears. (known as tinitus)  I asked my brain to make it be gone by morning. And, Le Pouf, it was gone. It is still gone.

I asked my brain to make me wake up in the morning feeling focused and very  motivated. (it was about a particular task I needed to complete) And, lo and behold, I had a very productive day.

And here is a weird one. I asked my brain to figure out the best way to fix my audio tape machine. When I woke up, a little voice said, turn it upside down. I did and it worked fine. By the way, it is still upside down to this day. To use it, I simply stand on my head and all is right wth the world. :)
