One thing I have learned in all of these years doing Hypnotherapy, is that we are all flawed. When I sit with a client, one on one, I often learn how unhappy a person is or how low their self esteem is. Perhaps they feel guilty because the have made terrible mistakes, or they cant let go of grief or anger or addictions. Some people are miserable and utterly hopeless everyday, others are so depressed that they feel they have no reason to live.
And yet, if you met these people, you would never know they feel this bad.
What really struck me is how we compare ourselves to others and feel that everyone else is fine, confident, happy, powerful and having a great family life.
On the outside they seem to enjoy their jobs, home life, and friends. But when the truth comes out in therapy I find out how miserable they really are.
If you think everyone around you has got it all together and they are feeling great, you might feel even worse because you feel you are the only one who doesn’t have it together.
If you are miserable, it can help to know that others are also miserable. (Yikes!)
I know that sounds strange, but if you normalize your situation and realize that you are not alone, you might feel better.
Seeing clients who are unhappy day after day made me realize how we imagine the happiness of others, compare this perception to our own situation and make ourselves even more miserable. Here’s where it gets a little weird.
This started having a positive effect on me. Realizing how difficult most people’s childhoods were, and how strained their family lives are, I started to appreciate my own childhood a little more.
What I thought was a crappy childhood doesn’t seem so bad in contrast to some of the painful upbringing that others had. Or, to look at it in a healthier way, I have come to appreciate the good moments that were present in my upbringing. Now, when I reflect back on my childhood, pleasant memories are the dominant thought.
The CDs I make always affect me. The Depression Buster CD asks you to go back to pleasant memories and feel the moments of joy, no matter how small or insignificant you thought they were. Building a series of these pleasant memories, sparks more happy memories… and as long as your brain is choosing what to remember… you might as well remember the good stuff.

They began drinking to try to make it all go away, and while they can’t escape the past, they also can’t build hope of future pleasant memories when everything looks hopeless. It is a hard place to be in your life. If you are struggling with depression, hopelessness, or addiction problems, there is a way to feel better.
