If you could be an expert at one thing… and that one thing would affect every aspect of your life, what would you choose?
What one skill would affect your ability to make more money, have better relationships, get laid more, create stellar marketing campaigns, be wildly successful in your career?
Did you say influence? Of course you did! Because you are very astute.
And, because I am very influential. Don’t you agree? Of course you do because I am so very persuasive.
Let’s begin. The art of persuasion is an ongoing learning process that may very well take a lifetime to master. I will speed it up for you.
Last week I taught you about rapport. Now lets look at -
CALIBRATION. Calibration means that you are noticing when you are in rapport with someone and when you are turning them off. You can compare, or calibrate your degree of influence. If you read last weeks article about creating rapport and you practiced it (of course you did. Now you are wise.) you know what it feels like to be in rapport.
Remember this- you cannot be persuasive unless you are in rapport.
You match the movements, the voice, the pace and tempo.
Next, you can begin to create agreement. You will need to find things to agree on so you are both internally saying, yes, yes, yeees!
Very often (and this may come as a big surprise) if you compliment a person they will internally agree with you. They will be saying to themselves “what a smart man, he thinks I look really hot today. He is so right”. See how easy it is?
You might say to a colleague or boss, “your proposal is very creative, I can see why you are so successful” and now that colleague is thinking- “yea, I am, I am, I AM!”
Let them know what they are doing right, or compliment them on something they are really good at.
Remember to create rapport, then create agreement. Resist the temptation to say “but”, don’t interrupt, let your head nod up and down, and talk about the things you agree on.
Listen, Agree, Compliment.. Now, CALIBRATE!
Is this person unconsciously maintaining rapport, moving with you (following your lead) and connected? If you lean in, do they lean in? If you cross your legs, do they cross their leg?
OR, in your masterful calibration, do you notice that they are leaning away, eyes darting away from you, shoulders turning, breathing rate increasing, they are looking for an escape route. You have expertly calibrated that they are not in rapport! What a smart one, you are!
Last week you mastered Rapport.
Now you have learned Calibration.
Become an expert at this and the next step will be your mastery of the scientific principles of INFLUENCE. There is some fascinating research that shows how people react, why they respond, how to trigger the right responses, and the things you can do that consistently create a powerful state of influence.
I know some of you are saying “But Wendi (I told you not to say but) that is manipulative!” I say, “Really? Are you sure you are not being manipulated in every decision you make in life?” Those who are successful in their field have one thing in common. What is it?
Listen closely. They are all masters of persuasion. They all have perfected the art of influence.
Is it manipulation, or do we call it charisma? (just don’t drink the Kool-aid)
Is it natural, or can it be learned?
