 Hypnosis Seminar Notes- STOP SMOKING part 1 of 3
 

THESE ARE NOTES FROM A RECENT WEBINAR FOR HYPNOTHERAPISTS - THESE ARE MEANT TO BE USED BY THE THERAPIST WITH THEIR CLIENT.

This booklet is the one that my participants get when they attend the stop smoking course. In itself, it doesn’t contain the entire course, of course.  So, here is the outline and my thoughts about the course.

 

The clients are given a guarantee. If they don’t stop smoking (their expectations are set very high before they arrive) they can return to any group session at no charge. They can attend one, or all three anytime. "The people who complete all three sessions feel really good and their commitment is permanent, as yours will be. Sometimes there are things that come up that might test your commitment, and if that happens... please know that you are welcome to come back for a booster".   Saying that is very different than telling them that if they fail, or don’t quit, they can return. If you offer a money back guarantee, guess what happens? C'mon, guess!!!  That is right grasshopper- you are now paying them to keep smoking. My course is about $300 per person in a group setting. If I offer a money back guarantee, they basically get $300 to start smoking again! And that would be a bad thing for everyone.

Before the first session, you will let them know that they will NOT quit on the first session. Like this- "When you come in for the first class, you are not going to quit.  Our first session together is going to help your mind to forget about smoking so that on the second week it is easy to stop. Now, there are some people who do STOP SMOKING on the first session because they just don’t feel like smoking, and that may happen for you as well, but the important thing is that you know that there is no pressure. Just come in, relax and find out how easy it is to make changes in your subconscious mind about smoking."

After you read that last sentence, you may discover, as I have, just how important the wording is. :) I wonder if you can find all the presupps and embedded suggestions. Are they now feeling really good about coming in?

Smokers are a funny bunch. If you have ever been a smoker, you know there is a lot of anxiety and fear about your quit day. By telling them they are not going to have to quit that first day, you increase your chances that they will SHOW UP! And that is a very good thing.

The first session will consist of handing out the booklet. I have a piece of paper for each person that asks why they want to stop smoking. Collect the papers, and question each one about the answers. Explain which reasons are good, and which ones suck. Make sure that you bring the commitment to the smoker in a personal way. In other words, make sure it is tied to something very valuable to them.

Bad reason to stop- "so my wife will quit nagging me about smoking"  "because it smells bad"  "because my dad died from lung cancer"

Good reasons to stop- "so I can have a close and loving relationship with my wife" "so my kids will not back away when I kiss them"  "because I want a healthy body and a long life. I want the pride of knowing that I honor my body and my health"

Make sense? Good. Next step.

Smoking is not addictive. No physical addiction. Your brain has adapted powerful triggers, emotional connections, associations, and even created neural pathways to connect smoking to all the pleasurable things you do.  But there is not a physical addiction.  It is important that you make the evidence very clear. If you were addicted you would not be able to sleep through the night without your dose of nicotine. You would increase the amount you smoke throughout your entire life. When people quit using an addictive substance, their body no longer can function normally because the cells need the chemical to be complete. Smokers quit every day and they do not physically suffer.

The addiction is psychological. And that is good news, because hypnosis can change the way your mind and body reacts to cigarettes. Many smokers who use hypnosis don’t have cravings. In fact most of them don’t. You will be very amazed to discover how your mind can eliminate the need for cigarettes.

Next thing- water and air. When your body feels like it needs a cigarette, sometimes it just needs air. Or water. When we are stressed, we breathe very shallow and need oxygen (and a break from the stress). Your very smart brain knows that a cig will get you both. Even though the deep breath you are about to take is filled with chemicals, it is still a deep breath. And the cigarette ritual provides a diversion. So you will still need to have a diversion, and do some deep breathing. In fact, during our hypnosis session today we are going to make the deep breath a trigger to release the need from your body and make you feel satisfied and relaxed. Sound good?

 

Sometimes when our bodies are dehydrated, they feel restless and needy. The need for water is often mistaken for the need to smoke or eat. During our hypnosis session we will replace the need for a cig, with the need for a glass of water. So, every time you drink a tall cool glass of water, you will feel cleansed and refreshed. Sound good?

 

The next thing we will do is create a powerful anchor. Your subconscious mind doesn’t know the difference between a real and an imagined event. So, during our session today, we will take you into the future when you are no longer a smoker, when you never think about cigarettes anymore and anchor it to the touch of your thumb and finger. When you rub your thumb and finger together like this, you will activate the state of mind in your subconscious that says you haven’t smoked for months.

Nutrition-

Your body will be very happy to release the need for cigarettes faster if you have good nutrition. Even though it is not addicted, your body has become accustomed to having these chemicals in the cells. Without these chemicals, you can feel uncomfortable because your body needs certain nutrients.  In your booklet you will see the nutrients that will help your body clean up and de-tox very quickly. The vitamin C is very important, as is the B complex for stress.

Your commitment will show in the way you treat your body in the next week.

If you do NOT feed your body well, and DO NOT take the supplements, and DO NOT listen to the CD every night, and yet you think that you should be a non-smoker for life, well you are kidding yourself. This program works when you apply the program. If you do what I say, by next week when you come back, it will be easy. If you do none of these things to prepare your mind and body, you will be frustrated and you will think that hypnosis doesn’t work.

 

I cannot do it TO YOU. However, you can take this opportunity to really discover how powerful your mind is and how powerful you are in making a commitment for life.

At this point you can ask your willing subjects if they have any questions or concerns. Be sure to let them know that during the hypnosis session, they will be aware of everything around them, sounds and stuff. Make sure they don’t spend time analyzing the session, just relaxing and enjoying.  Let them know that if one of them starts to fall asleep or snore you will come over and touch their arm to make them bring their awareness back to your voice. 

Now you can do the session. In the session you will create an anchor for THREE DEEP BREATHS. Anytime they take three deep breaths, they will feel relaxed and satisfied.
Water- anytime they drink a tall cool glass of water, they will cleanse their body and mind and feel refreshed and clear.

Thumb and finger anchor- take them into the future to a time when they are no longer a smoker, when they don’t even think about it. Make them touch their thumb and finger together. If any of them are not doing this, walk over and put their thumb and finger together for them!

You will also use lots of wording like this: Every day you will notice that you begin to forget about smoking, and sometimes you may find that you have gone hours without thinking about it… and you can imagine how good it will feel when you seem to remember to forget about smoking. Although some people forget to remember to smoke. I don’t know exactly how it will happen for you, but I do know that you will enjoy the feeling more and more every day of being ABSOLUTELY FREE from cigarettes.

There is also a process called THE BOX that I do in this first session. It is on the CD, and I don’t have the script for it. If you buy the CD you are welcome to use this process. (I love it) And you can make your own CD for your clients, since they really need to use this every night during the first week to set them up for the commitment session next week.
